A while ago, one of my clients, Ashley, who got married on August 22nd, 2009 said to me on our first meeting back in January of that year:
“Your timing is incredible! How do you do that?”
as she flips through the album that we show to our clients.
With extensive background in engineering (two degrees, B.S. and M.S.) and music (I have played the violin since age 6 until grad school), I’m a juxtaposition of the left and right brains. It gave me deep understanding of rhythm, patterns, timing, and structure. It also created in me the drive for perfection.
When you select a wedding photographer, you’re not just selecting the images they produce, you’re also selecting their vision as a representation of what you would want to keep forever. Hence, who I am and my vision has everything to do with what you will receive in the end as your wedding photos.
When I photograph a wedding, a person, a portrait of a couple, or whatever my subjects are, I try to empathize with the subjects. I try to put myself in their shoes and try to understand who they are in a very short time. This is why an engagement session is highly recommended prior to the wedding – it’s an easy and essential way for me to get a feeling about who you are and to understand you and your fiance’. To me, a wedding photo is more than just a pretty picture of the bride and groom – it’s really about who you are and the emotions you feel on your wedding day. I’m also documenting family history, as this is an important day in the families you came from, and the new family that you will create. I believe that each picture needs to be able to tell a story, a moment, or an emotion. Moments, emotions, and the story of the day can’t be staged – the best way is to document it as it happens, as life happens.
I’m probably one of the few “purist” wedding photographers in Austin where I believe that the content of the images are far more important than the processing. In other words, certain image “processing” (i.e. tea-stain look, cross processed, etc.) that are popular today, will not be popular tomorrow. I don’t chase trends – I focus on creating timeless, emotional, great images of your day without the trendy processing – I want you to look back on this day in 10 years and your images will still be timeless. A great B&W image will last a lifetime – a trendy processed image will not.
I’m honored that you took your time to explore my website and my blog in your search for your wedding photographer, and hopefully, who knows, we might just click and have the privilege to be there to preserve one of the most important day of your lives.
Sincerely and Best Wishes,
Tony Ku
